Johnson O’Malley Program

The Johnson O’Malley Program offers supplementary, culturally appropriate programs and services that meet the unique and specialized needs of Alaska Native/American Indian students in Fairbanks North Star Borough School District schools.

We use cultural heritage education to promote pride in culture, encourage social independence, and gain personal responsibilities and leadership skills.

JOM Projects

Native Families Engage in Education and Career Project

This project offers family service coordinator and tutor assistance at selected local elementary schools to enhance academic performance, monitor attendance, improve social-emotional learning skills, increase parent and family engagement, and provide career and leadership activities.

Family service coordinators offer a combination of academic assistance, attendance monitoring, support skills in social and emotional learning, parent engagement, and career/leadership activities.

Tutors offer academic tutoring and support to students.

This project also offers cultural activities, such as talking circle, and traditional language lessons.

Circles of Support

Family resource coordinator assistance is offered at selected junior and senior high schools. Cultural and social-emotional learning activities provided to students that may include talking circle, beading activities, leadership groups and more. Circles of Support seeks to improve the educational outcomes of AN/AI in secondary schools by providing academic intervention and social-emotional services with culturally relevant methods.

TechConnect

With TechConnect, families receive access to high-speed internet at home, hands-on workshops with a tech coach to learn to use iPads and Chromebooks confidently, as well as training for computer basics, computer and internet safety, Powerschool, Google Classroom, and more! TechConnect seeks to increase AN/AI students and parents engagement in remote learning through increased remote connectivity and technology skills, to support academic progress across the district.

Juvenile Justice Tribal Youth Program

Located at the Effie Kokrine Charter School, this program is designed to help students overcome obstacles to academic success, and graduation. A family service coordinator works with families, teachers and principal to identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses. These could include attendance, grades, and credits.

We also provide to students cultural and social/emotional learning activities to students, such as talking circle, beading activities, leadership groups and more.

JOM Potlatch Dancers

JOM provides Native song and dance, as well as performing within the Fairbanks area, available during the school year.
