Head Start

FNA Head Start Philosophy

FNA Head Start 0-5 empowers parents as a child’s first and most influential teacher.  We are a safe learning space designed to strengthen families and help each student enrich their school readiness goals. We collaborate with parents through relationship-based practices to support the emotional, physical, and cognitive development of each enrolled student. We celebrate and value each student’s heritage and honor the practices each family home uses for language, culture and the subsistence lifestyle.

We use cultural heritage education to promote pride in culture, encourage social independence, and gain personal responsibilities and leadership skills.

Overview

FNA Head Start promotes the cultural identity of Alaska Native and American Indian families while giving children educational, physical, and social skills and tools to have a great head start toward school readiness. All of the children receive screenings to help ensure they are where they should be developmentally, and Head Start seeks to obtain additional services for them when needed. Head Start works with families to connect with partnering community agencies for additional resources that they may need.
FNA Head Start opened its doors in 1993. The original site provided had 15 staff for Part Day services for 60 students and Home-Based services for 22 students. In 1998, the program expanded service to introduce Early Head Start for an additional 80 families in Center-Based and Home-Based options.

Today, FNA Head Start 0-5 has an early education trained staff who provide center-based and home-based learning options for working families. Our program is currently funded to serve 224 enrolled students: 121 slots for Head Start (3-5 years old) and 103 slots for Early Head Start (0-2 years old).

FNA Head Start 0-5 accepts applications from all families living in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Successful student enrollment at FNA Head Start 0-5 introduces the student to early intervention, developmental, social and emotional skill building, active learning spaces and nutritional activities. All children receive appropriate developmental screenings and referrals.

The program welcomes and celebrates all students and their families to strengthen family-school-community connections. We enhance the importance of cultural heritage of each student through onsite, outside learning environments and field trips to Borough learning opportunities that can involve the entire family.
