FNA statement on U.S. Senate passage of federal budget

 July 1, 2025

At Fairbanks Native Association, we are deeply troubled by the U.S. Senate passing its devastating spending bill.

This bill reduces Tribal funding by $2.7 billion, or 8.2%, in critical services across Indian county. This is part of a downward trend of ignoring the federal fiscal responsibility to Tribes.

Medicaid cuts will be destructive as an estimated 38,000 Alaskans may lose their health insurance, thereby impacting their providers. Nearly 70,000 Alaskans rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and these cuts will worsen food insecurity, especially in rural and seasonal worker communities.

The Senate budget used cuts to these important programs to pay tax gains for the extremely wealthy and corporations. The budget will add $3.3 trillion to the national debt, an unbearable expense to our future generations.

We urge the U.S. House to salvage Medicaid, SNAP and other important programs and decrease the national debt.

FNA will continue to serve our mission to provide support to those in need of educational, community services and behavioral health services.
