EHS/HS Child Application

Vision

We are a professional program implementing developmentally appropriate practices in the field of Early Childhood Education.

Mission
We advocate and provide services to all Head Start families in the Fairbanks North Star Borough, empowering them to be responsive to their child’s health, education, safety, and developmental needs in a caring environment while fostering cultural respect.

History of Fairbanks Native Association Head Start

FNA Head Start opened its doors in 1993.  The original site, the Poldine Carlo Building named in honor of one of FNA’s founders, provided part day care for 60 children and home base care for 22 children. The original program had 15 staff members. FNA Head Start has grown through the years and a staff of 35 now enriches community children at three sites, Barnette, Cushman and the Poldine Carlo Building on 2nd Avenue.  In 2008 the program has 140 children enrolled on site (40 extended day and 80 part day) as well as 22 home based children under their care.

Services
All FNA Head Start children are guided in developing social skills, physical fitness and educational tools that give them a head start towards kindergarten. All children receive appropriate developmental screenings and referrals as needed. The program is inclusive and promotes cultural identity of Alaska Native and American Indian families through onsite activities and field trips to cultural event such as the Festival of Alaska Native Arts.
All enrolled Head Start children are eligible and participate in the CACFP (Child & Adult Care Food Program).

Home Based (Ages birth to 5 years)
Families receive weekly visits in the home from a Head Start teacher.  The teacher helps the child develop their social, physical and educational skills through appropriate developmental activities. Home based families are invited to center based socials twice a month where they can enjoy family style meals and interaction with other children and families.

Center Based (Ages 3-5 years)

Center based services focus on health, nutrition, education, and cultural activities.
